Close Encounters with a Chinese Lion

The City of Durham celebrates the Chinese New Year of the Dragon with a traditional Chinese Lion Dance in front of Durham Indoor Market. Durham’s famous lion dance is traditionally performed each Chinese New Year. It is an energetic display featuring expert dancers from Oceans Apart Kung Fu Club, cloaked from view by an impressive lion costume with fluttering eyelids and a moveable jaw, and accompanied by a host of percussionists. Together they wend their way through the city, entertaining the crowds lining the streets throughout the afternoon. The lion is a very friendly lion (once he has eaten) who takes a particular interest in children… These toddlers may have got a little bit too close for comfort!
